What is meant by neuro-affirming?
Neuro-affirming practice involves recognising and respecting the diverse ways that neurodivergent individuals, such as autistic or ADHD individuals, experience and interact with the world. This approach emphasises valuing and supporting each person's unique communication style, rather than trying to change the individual to fit neurotypical norms. As neuro-affirming therapists we work collaboratively with clients, focusing on their strengths, preferences, and needs to develop individualised strategies that enhance communication while honouring their neurodivergent identity. The goal is to empower clients by affirming their neurological differences and fostering authentic, effective communication that aligns with their true selves.
Neurodivergence refers to the natural variations in how our brains function and process information. Understanding neurodivergence helps in appreciating these differences, fostering acceptance, and providing support tailored to each individual's needs and abilities. Autism is one form, but neurodivergence also includes ADHD, dyslexia, Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), cerebral palsy, and Down's Syndrome.
At Serennu Therapies, we offer strength-based and inclusive strategies that cater to unique communication needs. We employ a range of strategies, ensuring that interventions align with the child's natural interests and abilities. By working closely with families, setting staff, and other professionals, we can promote effective communication and learning environments that respect and embrace each child's individuality.
