What is Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)?
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to methods and tools used to support communication. AAC encompasses a wide range of approaches, from simple tools like picture boards and gesture systems to more advanced electronic devices and apps that generate speech. These tools help individuals express their thoughts, needs, and emotions, enhancing their ability to communicate with others and participate in daily life. AAC is tailored to each person's specific needs, providing them with a voice that aligns with their abilities and communication goals. Research and clinical experience show us that AAC often supports spoken words.
How do we promote AAC at Serennu Therapies?
Serennu Therapies is founded on the belief that everyone with communication challenges can learn to communicate effectively, given the appropriate tools and support. Consistent with evidence-based research, we do not insist on any prerequisite skills to be eligible for a comprehensive AAC system. Our approach is to always presume competence, advocating for individuals to have access to robust AAC from the start.
We evaluate an individual's unique communication needs, preferences, and abilities to identify the most appropriate Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system. We offer personalised suggestions, which may involve low-tech options like picture boards or high-tech devices such as specialised communication apps with voice output capabilities.
In addition, we provide comprehensive training to families and support staff. This includes supporting communication partners to effectively use AAC approaches and integrate them into daily activities to maximise communication opportunities.
As Speech and Language Therapists, we strive to empower individuals to communicate autonomously, achieve greater independence, and participate fully in their communities.
What are the benefits of AAC?
Enhances Communication: AAC enables children to effectively express themselves, enhancing their ability to communicate needs, desires, and feelings.
Increased Participation: It helps children engage more fully in social, educational, and family activities, promoting greater inclusion and interaction with peers and adults.
Supports learning: AAC can support learning by enabling children to participate in classroom activities, follow instructions, and access a wider range of materials.
Enhanced Self-Esteem: A reliable communication method helps build confidence and self-esteem, reducing frustration or anxiety associated with communication barriers.
Increased Independence: AAC enables children to make choices and express themselves more independently.
Support for Language Development: Many AAC systems are designed to promote language growth by providing opportunities for children to practice and learn new words and phrases. AAC does NOT hinder speech development.
Facilitated Interaction: AAC tools can assist in developing meaningful relationships with family members and peers by bridging any communication gaps and enhancing understanding.
Reduces Frustration: By providing a clear means of communication, AAC can help minimise the frustration that may arise from difficulty expressing oneself.
