What is delayed echolalia?
(gestalt language processing)
Delayed echolalia refers to repeating words, phrases, or sentences heard previously, sometimes minutes, hours, or even days later. This could be from media such as TV/films/YouTube videos, and people in their environment. This form of echolalia is considered part of the early stages of gestalt language development.
Gestalt language processing (GLP) is when individuals use these memorised chunks of language, or “gestalts,” as building blocks for developing more complex and spontaneous language over time. This process helps them make sense of language and communicate their wants, needs, and thoughts effectively. Many autistic individuals process language this way, however so do non-autistics. Not everyone will need support to develop their language from delayed echolalia and will naturally do this on their own. Some individuals may become 'stuck' communicating via delayed echolalia and could benefit from speech and language therapy support to move to more flexible and self-generated language.
